I have a great packback that I bought from the ricksteves.com website. I brought it with me to Europe and it was so small and light that I hardly knew it was there. It was perfect for carrying a couple of bottles of water and snacks as we walked from place to place. A trip to the store before heading out allows you to buy a picnic lunch and carry it with you to enjoy later. This is a great way to save money when you don't want to eat in a restaurant all the time.
Here's a word of caution, though: Be very careful not to keep anything of value or importance in the backpack. Pickpockets are good at opening zippers and even slicing backbacks open to get at the contents. Always assume that your backpack will be stolen or the contents lifted. Only keep things in the backpack that won't cause you a problem if they're lost. That includes cameras, film, digital storage devices, video tape, passports, credit cards, tickets, etc. If you follow this little rule, you won't have to worry about a theft ruining your trip.
