We selected the Hotel La Meridiana in Sorrento, Italy for a brief overnight visit. We left our suitcases in Rome and took the train to Naples, where we switched to the Circumvesuviana train that continues to Pompeii and Sorrento. After a long afternoon of walking around the unbelievable ancient city of Pompeii, we arrived in Sorrento and walked to the hotel.
We were very pleasantly surprised at the nice room they gave us and the wonderful view of the ocean, which was actually the Bay of Naples. The scenic view included an overlook of the famous lemon grove across the street, where we went to try and buy some of the Limoncello we had heard so much about. The limoncello is made from the rinds of lemons and has alcohol added to make a rather strong liquor. It's not for everyone, but has a wonderful citrus taste and smell. We brought home 3 or 4 small bottles and bring it out when we have guests to share it with them. The lady at the hotel desk gave us a map and circled a couple of restaurants we could choose from. We ended up walking about 20 minutes to a very nice place, where we had a wonderful dinner, great service and met a couple from London who were also enjoying their meal immensely. After dinner, we walked back to the hotel. We were very tired and slept soundly. The hotel was very quiet and we were well-rested in the morning.
Our visit to Sorrento was short, but I was very happy that we took the time to go and see Sorrento. Our next trip to Italy will include time along the Amalfi Coast. We can't wait to go back! Consider the Hotel La Meridiana if you go to Sorrento. It is a well run, reasonably priced hotel.
