The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
cwo3ward @ 11/ 06/ 2009

The galleria was named after Vittorio Emanuelle II, the first king of united Italy.  It was designed in 1861 and actually built between 1866 and 1877.  There are restaurants (I got insanely overcharged in one of them, but that's another story), famous brands (Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, etc.) and other shops selling sun glasses, ties and scarves.  There's something for everyone!

The galleria connects the Piazza del Duomo to the Teatro alla Scala (the world famous opera house).  It's a nice stroll through the galleria.  You can look in the shops, buy gelato and eat in the restaurants.  We chose to walk up to the 2nd floor and eat in one of the restaurants there.  They have wonderful cafeteria-style choices.  The food is really good and much of it is prepared for you while you watch.  Everything from steaks (I had one and it was great) to pastas, buffalo mozzarella and tomato, sandwiches, salads, you name it!  Much cheaper than the restaurants downstairs and a better selection.

My wife bought a number of purses from the Gucci store (wow, expensive!) for gifts and we also bought some ties and scarves for family and friends.  It is fun just to walk up and down and see who is there and watch people while they scurry about.  And when you're done looking around, there is the fabulous Duomo waiting for you right out in the square!

What were the WOW moments you experienced?
We had been in the Galleria before, and it is just a massive, old but nicely maintained shopping area. It has beautiful floors and the glass canopy is impressive to see. Be sure to wander through and see it for yourself the next time you're in Milan!
