Angels And Demons - WATER
cwo3ward @ 09/ 12/ 2009

Vittoria Vetra had been kidnapped.  The hassassin believed he had killed Professor Langdon.  Now he had taken Vittoria as his reward.  One more Cardinal remained and it was time to finish his task.

After another struggle with the hassassin, Robert Langdon found himself trying to save the life of the Cardinal, who was bound by chains and thrown in the fountain.  Try as he might, the Cardinal could not be saved.  On the Cardinal's chest was the Illuminati brand - WATER.  The hassassin had gone and Vittoria was in great danger.

The Fountain of the Four Rivers represents the great rivers on the four continents (as known to the Renaissance geographers of the day).  There was the Nile River in Africa, the Danube in Europe, the Rio de la Plata in America and the Ganges River in Asia.  Professor Langdon noted that this was a Pagan fountain as no angels were to be found anywhere on the fountain.  The centerpiece of the fountain is an Egyptian obelisk.  And at the top of the obelisk, a bronze dove stands alone.  The Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona was one of Bernini's most famous works.  Gian Lorenzo Bernini was the artist responsible for this fountain...again.

The lone dove is the pagan symbol for the Angel of Peace.

Looking off into the distance, Professor Langdon took note that the dove was gazing to the west.

Let angels guide you on your lofty quest.

The location of the Illuminati lair became clear once Robert Langdon climbed higher up the fountain.  The famous building, a castle, a fortress, a circular structure with grounds in the shape of a Pentagram.  On the top was a huge angel with sword pointed down at the center of the castle.  Leading directly to the castle was the famous Bridge of Angels.  The 12 angels lining the bridge were carved by none other than Bernini himself...

This series of articles is aimed at examining the sites in the Dan Brown novel (and now motion picture) Angels and Demons.  The book provided some insights into places in Rome that are often overlooked, simply because there are so many things to see in Rome.  Join me in learning more about these places and the history and people behind them.  Please contribute your photos of the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi or "Fountain of the Four Rivers."

What were the WOW moments you experienced?
My wife and I walked across Piazza Navona at night to see the Fountain of the Four Rivers. Unfortunately, the fountain was covered with scaffolding and canvas. I was unable to get any pictures so another trip to the piazza is in my future!
