Michelangelo's David At The Accademia Gallery
cwo3ward @ 07/ 26/ 2009

Michelangelo was only 26 years old when he was commissioned to take on the challenge of turning an old block of Carrara marble into the David (representing a nude King David). He spent two years sculpting the statue.  When it was completed in 1504, the David was moved to the front of the entrance to the Palazzo Vecchio. It was moved to the Accademia Gallery in 1873 to protect it from damage.

Bah Humbug! No pictures allowed. Traveling all the way to Italy and not being allowed to get pictures was a rude surprise. I suppose they have their reasons, but I wanted a photo album of what I saw at the gallery. You will too, I'm sure. So, we'll do our best to collect some pictures and post them here! At my wife's insistence, I snapped a couple of pictures anyway, so it's a start. But, there was so much to see and I didn't buy a book while I was there. I usually buy a book and read up on the place before I write about it. Oh well! Can anyone help me assemble some pictures?  There is a lot more that can be learned about Michelangelo's David.

What were the WOW moments you experienced?
This statue is impressive. It is hard to imagine how Michelangelo could have sculpted such an incredibly realistic figure.
